A round dining table solves two problems at once: it doesn't create a corner in the walkway, and it seats all guests in a circle instead of a row. The price for this is calculation work, because at a round table, the space does not grow with the length, but with the circumference. This page shows you how to determine the number of people from the diameter and at what size a round table becomes unstable.

From Diameter to Number of People
Multiply the diameter by 3.14 and divide by 60 centimeters of table edge per place setting. This is the theoretical upper limit; in practice, you subtract one to two places from this, because legs and serving space take up room:
- Ø 120 cm: theoretically six, comfortably four to five.
- Ø 130 to 132 cm: comfortably six, tightly also seven.
- Ø 140 cm: six with serving space in the middle, eight without.
- Ø 150 to 152 cm: eight places, which is the upper limit in our assortment.
The small diameters around 79 to 80 centimeters are not family dining tables, but two-person tables for the kitchen, loggia, or suite.

The limit is 140 centimeters, and it is not a matter of taste
Speaking across the table works as long as the face-to-face distance remains under approximately one and a half meters. At Ø 140, this is exactly 140 centimeters, but at Ø 152, it's already over one and a half meters, and from there, a round of eight regularly breaks into two conversations. The second point is reach: whatever is in the middle must be accessible to everyone. At Ø 150, this means an arm's reach of 75 centimeters, more than an outstretched arm can manage while seated. If you plan larger, you are better served with an oval top, which accommodates the same number of people in less space.
The central pedestal is the real advantage
Almost all round models stand on a column or a pedestal instead of four legs. This is not just about aesthetics: with a central pedestal, there is no position where a chair leg would hit a table leg. You can place four chairs or six without considering the leg grid, and you can spontaneously fill the table with more guests. The trade-off is stability at the edge: lean less on a pedestal base than on a four-legged table, especially with models featuring heavy stone tops.
Why round tables save small spaces
In a room under 16 square meters, a rectangular table presents four dangerous corners at hip height. A round table has none, and the walkway around it is equally wide at every point. Allow 90 to 100 centimeters from the edge to the wall, and a Ø 130 table will require approximately 330 centimeters of space in both directions. If this doesn't fit, the table isn't too big; the space is simply chosen incorrectly.
Top and base
Round tops are available in our assortment in oak veneer, travertine, genuine marble, ceramic with marble look, and faceted clear glass. For round stone tops, weight counts double because it rests on a single point: for plank flooring and old buildings, check the load-bearing capacity and place a felt pad under the base to distribute the load. Lighting above the round table
A round top calls for a round light fixture; otherwise, two geometries will clash. The diameter of the light fixture should be about one-third to half of the table's diameter, meaning approximately 45 to 65 centimeters above a Ø 130 table. Hang it 75 to 85 centimeters above the top >> Chandeliers.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many people can sit at a round table with 140 cm?
Six can sit comfortably, eight is possible if the center remains clear. Mathematically, a circumference of 440 centimeters allows for seven place settings of 60 centimeters each.
At what diameter does a round dining table become impractical?
From about 150 centimeters. At this point, the center is beyond comfortable arm's reach, and conversation across the table tends to break off.
Does a round dining table need a round rug?
Not necessarily, but the rug must be large enough for the chairs to remain on it even when pushed back. This means the table diameter plus at least 140 centimeters.
