Eichholtz Benches and Stools

Eichholtz Benches and Ottomans

Benches are the most underestimated furniture group in the home. They require little space, offer seating without a backrest or bulk, and can be placed where an armchair would be too large. Eichholtz benches and ottomans feature velvet, leather, and bouclé on frames made of brass, stainless steel, or wood.

At the Foot of the Bed

The classic placement. A bench at the foot of the bed visually completes the bed and defines the space. It should be narrower than the bed, about two-thirds of the bed's width, and significantly lower than the mattress to maintain a subordinate appearance. It is practical in any case: this is where the bedspread lands, and where you put on your shoes. Together with a headboard, it creates a cohesive look instead of a freestanding mattress.

In the Entrance and Hallway

In the entryway, a bench transforms a passageway into a room. A seating height of around 45 centimeters is the norm, allowing space for shoes underneath. Alongside it, a console table for keys and mail and a wall mirror above are essential. This trio is the most reliable starting point for a well-designed entrance area, as detailed in our guide Luxurious Entrance Area Furnishing.

Ottomans as Mobile Reserves

Where a fixed bench is too much, ottomans take over. They can be moved, serve as a side table with a tray, as a footrest in front of an armchair, and as extra seating when guests arrive. Two identical ottomans under a console table are the most elegant way to have seating available without taking up permanent space.

Height, Fabric, and Everyday Use

A seating height of 45 centimeters fits almost anywhere; for a table, 45 to 48 centimeters is correct, while for a counter, the dimensions for bar stools apply. The choice of upholstery depends on the location: in the entrance, leather or a tightly woven fabric is a sensible choice, while in the bedroom, velvet may be preferred. Light bouclés look magnificent and require a spot where no one will bump into them with street shoes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How high should a bench be?

About 45 centimeters, which corresponds to normal chair height. At the foot of the bed, it may be lower than the mattress.

How wide should the bench at the bed be?

About two-thirds of the bed's width. If it's as wide as the bed, it appears as a second piece of furniture rather than a finishing touch.

Bench or ottoman in the hallway?

A bench if the space is permanently assigned and shoes are to be stored underneath. Ottomans if the hallway is narrow and the seating should remain mobile.
