Neoclassicism draws on antiquity: column, capital, bust, clear axes. It is the calmest of the classical luxury styles because it works with proportion rather than ornamentation. A neoclassically furnished room appears orderly, even if there is little in it.
The Characteristics
Symmetry as a fundamental law: a central axis, with identical elements on the left and right. Architectural citations: columns as pedestals for objects, capitals, straight cornices. Calm materials: light stone, lime, plaster, marble, with dark wood as a contrast. Figurative objects: busts and bronzes, sparingly placed, usually singly or in pairs.
Proportion over Decoration
The style stands and falls with proportions. A bust on a pedestal that is too low appears lost, while on one that is too high, it seems oppressive. A useful rule: the object should measure about one-third to half of the pedestal height, and the top edge of the object should be at eye level, i.e., about 150 to 160 centimeters. For mirrors above a console table: mirror width should be about two-thirds of the console width, and there should be at least 15 centimeters of space between the console top and the bottom edge of the mirror.
Where the Style Works Best
In the entrance area, because a clear axis is needed there anyway, and a single strong image achieves more than many pieces of furniture. The Boundary to the Museum
The style tips over when too many citations come together. Three columns, five busts, and a relief plate on the wall do not make a home, but an exhibition.
