The coffee table unites the seating area. It is the surface that everyone looks at, and therefore the piece where the room's materials and metals are most clearly displayed. Eichholtz coffee tables feature marble, smoked glass, solid wood, and frames with brass and stainless steel finishes.
Size and Height
A coffee table can be generously sized, approximately two-thirds of the sofa's length. Tables that are too small make the group appear disjointed. The ideal height is at the sofa's seat height or a few centimeters below, making it easily accessible while seated. There should be 40 to 45 centimeters between the sofa edge and the table edge: close enough for a cup, far enough for your legs.
Shape according to Floor Plan
Rectangular tables suit long sofas and rectangular rugs. Round and oval shapes soften pathways and are the better choice if there are children in the house or if the path leads closely past the table. Two smaller tables next to each other are more flexible than one large one: they can be offset, separated for serving, and appear more dynamic in a long room.
Material and Care
Marble tops are porous, requiring impregnation and coasters. Smoked glass appears light and allows rug patterns to show through, but it does show marks. Solid wood is the most forgiving. Chrome-plated and gold-plated frames should only be cleaned with soft, dry cloths; abrasive cleaners will permanently dull their luster.
What Belongs on the Table
Three elements are sufficient: a bowl or a tray as a focal point, a tall object like a vase, and something flat like books. Complemented by lanterns, a unique island of light is created in the evening. Side tables take over the work at the armchairs, leaving the coffee table clear.
Frequently Asked Questions
How high should a coffee table be?
At the sofa's seat height or a few centimeters below, usually 40 to 45 centimeters. Taller tables quickly resemble dining tables.
How large should the coffee table be in relation to the sofa?
Approximately two-thirds of the sofa's length. It is better to be slightly too large than too small; small tables make the seating area appear unfinished.
Are two small tables better than one large one?
Often yes, for long sofas and narrow rooms. They can be repositioned, used individually, and add more movement to the room.
