Boxes solve a problem that every beautiful surface has: there is always something lying around that does not belong there. They are visible form and hidden storage space at the same time. Eichholtz boxes work with leather, smoked glass, marble, brass and inlays, often with velvet lining.
Where they are most useful
On the coffee table, they hold remote controls and charging cables; on the console table in the entrance, keys and loose change; on the nightstand, rings, watches, and medication. This is precisely where it is decided whether a surface looks tidy or not. A box is therefore less decoration than a piece of furniture in miniature.
Stacking instead of spreading
Two or three boxes of decreasing size stacked on top of each other form a pedestal on which an object is placed, such as a small vase or a sculpture. This creates height on a flat surface and appears deliberate. If you spread the same pieces individually across the room, it looks accidental. The stack also works as a pedestal under a lamp or next to a bowl.
Material and interior
Leather looks warm and is durable, smoked glass shows the contents and requires order within, marble and brass are heavy and stand firmly. More important than the exterior material is often the interior lining: velvet protects jewelry and watches from scratches, smooth interiors are the more practical choice for keys and technology. Hinges and lids should open with one hand, otherwise the box will not be used.
Part of a decorative group
