The living room is the space where an interior design must prove its worth. It is used daily, it is the room that guests see, and it has more functions than any other: sitting, talking, reading, watching television. A luxurious living room interior is not created by more furniture, but by a clear arrangement of seating axis, surface, and light.
Defining the seating axis
First, clarify what the room is oriented towards: the fireplace, the window, the television, or the group itself. Then, place the sofa as the largest piece, and only then everything else. Two armchairs opposite the sofa create a genuine conversation situation; a single armchair quickly looks like an afterthought. Maintain a distance of about 40 to 45 centimeters between the edge of the sofa and the coffee table, so the table remains accessible without being in the way.
Rug and coffee table: the foundation of the group
The rug defines the zone. It is almost always chosen too small. As a rule, the front legs of all seating furniture should rest on it. The coffee table may be generously sized, about two-thirds of the sofa's length, and should be approximately at seating height. Additionally, side tables serve the armchairs and sofa ends, where glasses, books, and lamps are placed.
Light in three layers
A single ceiling light makes the room appear flat. Build up the light in layers: a chandelier or a ceiling light as basic illumination, floor lamps behind or next to the seating furniture, table lamps on sideboards and side tables. The walls: mirrors, pictures, height
A large wall mirror opposite or to the side of the window doubles the daylight and makes the room appear larger. Wall art is often hung too high: the center of the picture should be at eye level, above the sofa starting about a hand's width above the backrest. Above a sideboard and console, a distance of about 20 to 30 centimeters keeps the group together.
Accessories last
Only when furniture, rug, and lighting are in place do the details come: vases, bowls, lanterns, and cushions. Group them in odd numbers and at different heights; this appears calmer than an even row. Fewer, but larger objects are preferable to many small ones.
