Ceiling lights are the workhorses of illumination. They brighten a room without taking up space and are often the only light source already present when moving in. Eichholtz ceiling lights range from flat ceiling dishes for low rooms to alabaster and smoked glass hemispheres that act as objects even in daylight.
Ceiling Light or Chandelier
The room height is decisive. Below 2.50 meters, a flat ceiling light is the right choice; it keeps headroom clear and still acts as a designed piece. From 2.70 meters and above a table where no one walks underneath, a chandelier can hang. In hallways and above doors, the rule always applies: at least 2.10 meters of clearance height below the light. Details on hanging height can be found in the guide Eichholtz Chandeliers.
The Most Common Mistake: Only One Light Source
A ceiling light alone makes any room appear flat. It illuminates evenly from above, casts harsh shadows on faces, and leaves corners dark. Good lighting works on three levels: general light from the ceiling, zone light from floor lamps and table lamps, and accent light from wall lights on pictures and objects. Only together does depth emerge. The entire setup is explained in the guide Luxury Lighting.
Diameter and Position
As a rough rule for diameter: room length plus room width in meters, the result in centimeters. A room of four by five meters can thus accommodate about 90 centimeters. The light should be in the center of the area it is meant to illuminate, not necessarily in the center of the room. Above a dining table, this means the center of the table, even if the outlet is elsewhere. An offset outlet can be compensated with a canopy and chain.
Light, Color, and Dimming
2700 Kelvin is the tone that makes brass, gold, and wood look warm. Cool white light makes the same materials appear gray. More important than any light fixture is a dimmer: it transforms a ceiling light into a task light during the day and provides basic brightness in the evening. Suitable light bulbs in a warm tone are part of the planning; they influence the effect more than the price of the fixture.
Frequently Asked Questions
What diameter should a ceiling light have?
Room length plus room width in meters gives the guideline value in centimeters. Four by five meters therefore corresponds to approximately 90 centimeters.
How much space must remain below the light?
At least 2.10 meters wherever people walk through. Above tables, it may hang significantly lower.
Is one ceiling light per room sufficient?
No. It provides basic brightness but no depth. A room only truly comes alive when combined with floor, table, and wall lights.
