Chests of drawers and sideboards bring order to a home. They store what would otherwise be lying around and at the same time provide a surface on which a room can display its character. Where a chest of drawers works
In the entrance area, a chest of drawers holds keys, mail, and gloves, and above it, a mirror. In the living room, a sideboard replaces a display cabinet for everything that does not need to be visible. In the dining room, crockery is readily accessible, and in the bedroom, a tall chest of drawers replaces a second wardrobe. Matching bedside tables continue the line by the bed.
Height, width, proportion
Sideboards are usually 75 to 90 centimeters high; chests of drawers in the bedroom may be taller. For a long wall, the furniture should occupy about two-thirds of the wall's length; otherwise, it will appear lost. What hangs above it should be narrower than the furniture, about two-thirds to three-quarters of its width, with a distance of 20 to 30 centimeters from the top.
Display cabinets: showing instead of storing
Display cabinets are the opposite. They require selection, as everything inside is visible. Glasses, carafes, and a few objects of the same material family work well, illuminated from within or by a light in front. If you want to store a lot, combine both: a display cabinet for what is visible, a chest of drawers for the rest.
The surface above
Three elements suffice: a wall mirror or a wall art on the wall, a table lamp as a light island, and a group of a vase and a bowl. Arranged asymmetrically, this appears more vibrant than an exact center, and the surface remains usable.
