Eichholtz Dining Table Oval

Eichholtz oval dining table

The oval dining table is the compromise that isn't one: It accommodates the same number of people as a rectangular table without presenting its corners. In narrow dining rooms and open-plan layouts where the path leads past the table, it is the only shape that can do both. The Eichholtz range also includes free-form designs, where the edge is organic rather than mathematical.

Why the rounded edge offers more than it costs

A rectangular top measuring 200 by 120 centimeters has four corners that protrude into the room exactly at hip height. On the same footprint, an oval top loses about ten percent of its surface area but gains a walkway that does not bend at any point. In rooms where the table is centrally located and passed on both sides, this is not a style argument, but a traffic argument. The effect is amplified with length: With a three-meter top, you can still pass a rounded edge, but a sharp one will be brushed daily.

Dimensions in the assortment

Oval and organically shaped tops range from 150 to 300 centimeters in length and 100 to 135 centimeters in width. You calculate the number of people based on the length, as with a rectangular table, but subtract half a seat at each end because the top narrows there:

Freeform: a different place on each side

Some of the models do not follow an ellipse, but a free contour, sometimes flared like a leaf, sometimes indented on one side. This has a practical consequence that one should be aware of beforehand: The places are no longer equal. At the widest point, one sits generously, at the indented point more closely, and a symmetrical place setting cannot be arranged. Those who use the table for changing gatherings gain character from this. Those who want to seat eight people exactly the same every evening will choose the classic ellipse.

The freeforms are also the models where the grain becomes a central theme: On a curved edge, the veneer pattern does not run parallel to the edge, but cuts it at varying angles. With oak that has a pronounced grain, this is the actual point of the design >> Wooden Dining Table.

The narrow room: here the shape decides

Calculate the space requirement as follows: table width plus twice 90 to 100 centimetres for the pushed-back chairs. An oval table top of 120 centimetres width therefore requires approximately 310 centimetres of room width. If your dining room is narrower, opt for a table top width of 100 to 110 centimetres and accommodate the number of people by extending the length. This is precisely what the oval shape achieves: it scales in length without creating corners at the ends, and therefore fits into rooms where a rectangle would only work with seating on one side.

Legs and Pedestals

Oval table tops in our assortment are predominantly supported by two pedestals or a double base, not by four corner legs. This keeps the head ends free, and it is precisely there that the ninth guest sits at an oval table. Please check the clear distance between the pedestals, as this determines how many chairs can actually fit side-by-side along the long side without a chair leg hitting a pedestal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can sit at an oval dining table measuring 200 cm?

Six along the long sides, making eight with the two ends. At the ends, the table top is narrower, so seating is more compact than on the sides.

Is an oval table smaller than a rectangular one of the same dimensions?

The surface area is about ten percent less, but the number of seats remains practically the same for the same length. The difference lies in the serving area in the middle, not in the seating capacity.

What is a freeform dining table?

A table top whose edge follows a free contour instead of an ellipse. The seating spaces are therefore of varying widths, but the table appears as a unique piece rather than a geometric shape.
