Life on Mallorca is different from the mainland: the transition between inside and outside is fluid, the house is usually a second home, and the air carries salt. These three points determine the choice of materials more than any style question.
The Finca sets the framework
Thick natural stone walls, small window openings, cool interiors, and a patio: the classic island architecture keeps the heat out and lets in little light. Therefore, bright, calm surfaces and a few, clearly placed pieces work better than cluttered rooms. Large window reveals are good places for benches. Wicker and linen naturally fit here, see Rattan and Wicker and Coastal.
Salt, sun, and their consequences
Salty air reaches several kilometers inland. It attacks unprotected metals, especially screws and connections, and settles on surfaces. Together with the high UV exposure, this means: for outdoors, only true outdoor quality, regular rinsing with clear water, and no indoor furniture under the pergola. Even indoors, it is worth checking fittings if the house is uninhabited and unventilated for months.
An empty house is a special case
Second homes are often empty from October to May. Without ventilation, humidity rises, upholstery absorbs odors, and metal parts corrode. Removable covers, furniture on legs instead of closed bases, and, where possible, a dehumidifier have proven effective. Textiles should not be placed under closed covers before departure; they need air.
Transport to the island
Deliveries are made via ferry, usually from Barcelona or Valencia. This is routine but takes time, and capacities are tight during peak season. If you want to be ready for summer, you should order significantly earlier than would be necessary on the mainland. For remote fincas, access should be clarified in advance: gravel roads and narrow gates are the most common obstacles.
