Luxury furniture for Madrid: dry air, sun, Salamanca

Located at an altitude of 650 meters inland, Madrid has a climate that is more demanding for furniture than any other in our markets: very dry air, large temperature fluctuations between day and night, and aggressive sun in summer. Those who plan for this will enjoy solid pieces for a long time.

Dry air is the real issue

In winter with heating and in summer with air conditioning, the relative humidity in Madrid apartments regularly falls below 30 percent. Solid wood then shrinks, joints open, veneer edges can detach, and natural wicker becomes brittle. Two countermeasures are effective: actively maintaining humidity, ideally between 40 and 60 percent, and for large surfaces, choosing veneer instead of solid wood because it is more dimensionally stable. More on this under Oak and Rattan and Wicker.

Sun and color

The light is clear and harsh. Colors appear stronger here than in Northern Europe, which is why muted tones often work better than in Paris or Amsterdam. At the same time, direct sun bleaches textiles and leather. Apartments in Barrio Salamanca with south-facing balconies therefore need interior shutters or curtains, otherwise a sofa will show a light side after two summers.

Old building and villa

In Barrio Salamanca, there are apartments with high ceilings, stucco, and double doors, often with narrow elevators in the stairwell. The same applies there as in Paris: check door width, staircase curve, and cabin dimensions before ordering. In the villa districts in the north, such as La Moraleja, delivery is uncritical; however, the rooms are larger and can accommodate formats that would be too large in the city: long sofas, expansive dining tables, and large rugs that define a zone.

Outdoor living

Madrid uses terraces from April to October, but with high UV exposure. Weatherproof designs are a must here, not a comfort, and light covers last visually longer than dark ones because fading is less noticeable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does solid wood crack more often in Madrid?

Because the relative humidity regularly falls below 30 percent due to heating and air conditioning. Wood then shrinks. Between 40 and 60 percent, the movement remains inconspicuous.

Which furniture fits into an apartment in Barrio Salamanca?

Those that fit through narrow elevators and winding staircases. Door width, narrowest point of the staircase, and cabin dimensions should be checked before ordering; modular sofas have an advantage.

How do you protect furniture from the Spanish sun?

Through interior shutters or curtains and by ensuring upholstered furniture is not permanently in the sun's axis. Direct exposure bleaches textiles and leather unevenly.
