Krakow is home to many historic buildings. The Kamienice around the Rynek and in Kazimierz date back to the 19th century, feature ceilings ranging from 3.50 to over 4 meters, and stucco work that is a protected monument. This provides the perfect backdrop for classic interior design, yet also presents the most challenging delivery situation in Poland.
Four-meter ceilings demand height
In high rooms, normally sized furniture can appear lost. What works well is verticality: a chandelier with sufficient height rather than diameter, a tall wall mirror above the console table, a display cabinet instead of a flat sideboard. The lower edge of the light fixture may hang lower than usual here, around 2.20 to 2.40 meters, otherwise it will disappear in the room.
Stucco means: drilling is not permitted everywhere
In listed ceilings, the position of the ceiling outlet is usually fixed and cannot be moved. This dictates the furniture arrangement: the dining table is placed where the light fixture hangs, not the other way around. Where there is no outlet, floor lamps and table lamps take over, which is often the more pleasant solution in old buildings.
Staircase before elevator
Many Kamienice do not have an elevator, or have one retrofitted in the stairwell that can barely accommodate one person. Delivery then takes place via the stairs, and there, it is not the width of the steps that limits, but the landing. Before ordering, someone should measure the narrowest point. Disassemblable models and modular sofas are the safe choice here.

Frequently Asked Questions
How high should a chandelier hang with a four-meter ceiling?
Lower than usual, around 2.20 to 2.40 meters from the bottom edge to the floor. If it hangs higher, it loses its impact in the room.
Is it permissible to drill into a listed stucco ceiling?
Generally not freely. The existing outlet dictates the position, so the furniture arrangement is based on the light fixture and not vice versa.
What should be considered when delivering to a Kamienica?
The landing in the stairwell, not the width of the steps. Measure there. Disassemblable furniture and modular sofas almost always fit.
