Krakow is characterized by its historic buildings. The Kamienice around the Rynek and in Kazimierz date back to the 19th century, feature ceilings from 3.50 to over 4 meters high, and stucco that is under monument protection. This provides the backdrop for classically inspired furnishings, and at the same time presents the most challenging delivery situation in Poland.
Four-meter ceilings require height
In high rooms, normally dimensioned furniture can appear lost. What works well is verticality: a chandelier with sufficient height rather than diameter, a tall wall mirror above the console table, a display cabinet instead of a flat sideboard. The lower edge of the light fixture may hang lower than usual here, around 2.20 to 2.40 meters, otherwise it will disappear in the room.
Stucco means: drilling is not permitted everywhere
For ceilings under monument protection, the position of the ceiling outlet is usually fixed and cannot be moved. This determines the furnishing: the dining table is placed where the light fixture hangs, not the other way around. Where there is no outlet, floor lamps and table lamps are used, which is often the more pleasant solution in old buildings anyway.
Staircase before elevator
Many Kamienice do not have an elevator, or one that was installed later in the stairwell and can barely accommodate one person. Delivery then takes place via the stairs, and there, it is not the width of the steps that limits, but the landing. Before ordering, someone should measure the narrowest point. Disassembleable models and modular sofas are the safe choice here.
