Furnishing a Rooftop Bar and Terrace in a Hotel

The rooftop bar is the area with the highest revenue per seat and the most challenging conditions. Wind, sun without shade, limited load-bearing capacity of the ceiling, and an elevator through which everything must pass. Clarifying these four points before selection will save you expensive surprises on delivery day.

Wind is the primary criterion

At height, forces act that are irrelevant at ground level. Light chairs tip over or move, parasols require heavy weights themselves, and loose decorations disappear. Therefore, outdoor chairs for rooftop terraces should be heavier than comparable models in a courtyard, without making repositioning impossible. Large planters in a row provide wind protection because they are not considered structural components and can be seasonally relocated.

Load capacity and elevator dimensions

Two technical values determine what can be placed upstairs. The permissible surface load of the roof structure limits the weight per square meter, which primarily affects filled planters, heavy stone tables, and water features. The second limit is the path upwards: cabin dimensions, door width, and the elevator's load capacity determine which pieces can be delivered in one go. Both should be clarified before ordering, not in the delivery week. Where the elevator is too small, only a disassembled version or a crane will help, and that is a separate cost item.

Bar and seating under the open sky

The counter follows the same dimensions as indoors, i.e., about 28 to 30 centimeters between the seat and the counter edge and 60 to 70 centimeters of counter length per stool, but the material must withstand outdoor conditions. For the lounge area, outdoor sofas with quick-drying cushions are suitable, along with outdoor coffee tables and outdoor accessories. Anything not bolted down should be storable in the evening. For basic counter dimensions, please refer to Hotel Bar and Counter.

Light that does not destroy the view

The view is the product of the rooftop bar. Bright light on the surface reflects in glasses and windows and precisely takes away this view. Deep, punctual sources are correct: lanterns and candle holders on the tables, light in planters and on railings, plus a little more brightness exclusively behind the counter. Permanently installed outdoor lights require the appropriate protection class, which the electrical planner clarifies before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which furniture is suitable for a rooftop terrace?

Weatherproof models with sufficient inherent weight against wind, which can still be moved by one person. Cushions require quick-drying cores and removable covers.

What needs to be clarified before delivery to a roof?

The permissible surface load of the roof structure and the path upwards, i.e., cabin dimensions, door width, and the elevator's load capacity. If a piece does not fit through, a disassembled version or a crane is needed.

How do you illuminate a rooftop bar?

With a few deep light points on tables and railings instead of bright area lighting. Too much light reflects in windows and obscures the view that defines the location.
