In many homes, the outdoor area is the most profitable zone of the season, yet it is also where furniture ages most quickly. Sun, rain, chlorine, salt, and daily repositioning all take their toll. Those who choose based on indoor criteria will find themselves replacing furniture after just two summers.
What truly matters outdoors
- Material and coating. Frames, joints, and screws determine longevity, not the seating surface. Chlorine and salt air attack unprotected metals.
- Weight against wind. Chairs that are too light will be blown across the terrace. Those that are too heavy cannot be put away in the evening. The right choice lies in between.
- Stacking or moving. Items that are moved every evening must be stackable or portable by two people. Otherwise, they will not be moved.
- Drying. Cushions require water-draining cores and removable covers; otherwise, they will smell after the first rain.
Poolside and lounging area
By the water, a simple rule applies: everything gets wet. Chairs and loungers by the pool edge should therefore dry quickly and stand securely. There should be space between two loungers for a towel and a drink; a side table between every two loungers is the usual solution. The path around the pool remains clear; typically, there should be at least 1.50 meters between the pool edge and the row of furniture, allowing staff with trays and guests with towels to pass each other.
Terrace as an extended dining area
If the terrace is part of the restaurant, it must continue its style; otherwise, it will appear as an add-on. Outdoor dining tables and outdoor dining chairs in the same design language as indoors achieve this effortlessly. For the lounge zone at the edge, outdoor sofas with outdoor accessories are suitable. The distances between tables are usually greater outdoors than indoors, due to the addition of parasols and movement areas.
Greenery and boundaries
Planters are more than just decoration outdoors: they provide wind protection, structure areas, and separate guest areas from pathways without the need for construction. Large planters in a row act as a boundary, while individual scattered pots do not. Those who can manage little maintenance may opt for artificial plants, which require a stable position outdoors to prevent them from falling over in the wind.
Evening lighting
Outdoor lighting determines how long guests stay outside. Deep, warm light points are more effective than bright area illumination: lanterns and candle holders on the tables, complemented by lights on walls and in planters. Permanently installed outdoor lights require a specific protection class, which should be clarified before ordering, especially in close proximity to water.
Frequently asked questions
Which furniture lasts longest by the pool?
Those with coated frames and corrosion-resistant joints, with quick-drying cushions and removable covers. Chlorine and salt air primarily attack unprotected metal parts.
How much space should be left between the pool edge and loungers?
Typically, at least 1.50 meters of clear path is recommended to allow guests and staff to pass each other. Between every two loungers, there should be a surface for drinks and towels.
How do you protect outdoor furniture over winter?
Ideally, store it in a dry and ventilated place. Where this is not possible, breathable covers and a location where water can drain away are helpful. Cushions should always be brought indoors.
