Bouclé has found its way into almost every living space in just a few years, and for a very understandable reason: the fabric adds volume and texture without introducing additional colour. A white bouclé armchair is a piece of furniture with character that still fits into any colour scheme. However, it does have a clear weakness.
What Bouclé Actually Is
The name comes from loop yarn: threads are twisted with uneven tension, creating small loops. These loops produce the typical curly, woolly surface and cast soft shadows, which makes the fabric appear three-dimensional and accentuates curves. This is precisely why it works so well on organically shaped pieces, see organic forms. On sharp-edged, strictly geometric furniture, however, it can quickly look out of place.
The Weakness: Pulled Threads
What defines its appearance is also its risk. Loops can be pulled out. Cat claws, dog paws, trouser zips, belt buckles, and jewellery are the most common culprits. A pulled thread is not a hole: it should not be cut and not pulled further, but rather re-inserted from the back with a blunt needle. If you have pets, you should avoid bouclé on heavily used seating surfaces and instead use it on an ottoman, a headboard, or a bench.
Cleaning
Vacuum with the upholstery nozzle without a brush roller, as a rotating brush will pull loops. Stains should be blotted, never rubbed. For light-coloured bouclés, it is worth knowing the cleaning code before anything happens, as many qualities can only be cleaned with solvents, and water leaves marks. Removable covers are a real advantage here, provided the model offers them.
Colour and Ageing
Bouclé is almost always offered in white, cream, sand, or grey, as the structure already breaks up the colour. Light tones may yellow slightly over years with strong sun exposure, evenly and usually inconspicuously. What does stand out, however, is dirt on armrests and edges. A bouclé sofa in a high-traffic area ages visibly faster than one in a quiet part of the room.
When It Is the Right Choice
Bouclé is suitable when a room has many hard surfaces and lacks warmth, without the need to add another colour. It is not suitable where meals are eaten daily, where animals sleep, or where pieces are placed close to walls and edges. If you desire the effect but require more robustness, you will find it in velvet with high abrasion resistance or in leather.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do you do with a pulled thread in bouclé?
Do not cut it. The loop is re-inserted from the back with a blunt needle. Cutting it will permanently open the surface.
Is bouclé suitable for homes with pets?
Only to a limited extent. Claws will pull the loops. Bouclé pieces away from main seating areas, such as ottomans, benches, or headboards, are more suitable.
How do you vacuum bouclé?
With the upholstery nozzle and without a rotating brush roller, as the brush will pull loops. Stains should be blotted, not rubbed.
