Inspiration

This Petal Bowl was inspired by a 17th-century carved marble basin in The Met collection. The Indian artwork is adorned with lyrical bands of stylized lotus blossoms and flanking leaf forms—motifs closely associated with the imperial courts of Mughal emperors Jahangir (r. 1605–27) and Shah Jahan (r. 1628–58), whose refined floral vocabulary defined the artistic language of northern India across both Mughal and Rajput realms. Even the basin's profile echoes the shape of an opening lotus bud, demonstrating the seamless unity of form and ornament that characterizes the finest stone carving of the period.
