Furnishing a dressing room: dimensions, light and organization

The dressing room is a space where dimensions dictate almost everything. It is rarely large, used daily, and only functions effectively if depths, clearances, and lighting are correct. Furniture comes after, and then only a few pieces.

The dimensions that guide everything

Short hanging items (shirts, blouses, jackets): approximately 100 centimeters in height per rail.
Long hanging items (coats, dresses): approximately 150 to 160 centimeters.
Depth: about 60 centimeters for hanging items placed sideways; 35 to 40 centimeters are sufficient for folded items and shoes.
Passage width: at least 90 centimeters to allow drawers and doors to open and for you to stand in front of them. For opposing fronts, preferably 110 centimeters.

Seating is essential

Without seating, you will be balancing while standing in the dressing room. A stool or a narrow bench in the center of the room is therefore not a luxury amenity, but a prerequisite for being able to put on shoes. In long, narrow dressing rooms, the bench should be placed at the head of the room, not in the center, otherwise it will block the passage.

Lighting where colors are true

This is the most common mistake. Warm light with low color rendering makes navy and black look identical and distorts skin tones in the mirror. Therefore, a high color rendering is essential in the dressing room, along with light from the front and sides instead of just from above. The same rule applies to mirrors as in the bathroom: two light points at eye level on the sides are significantly more flattering than a ceiling light behind you.

The mirror and small items

A wall mirror should show at least from the head to just below the knee, preferably full-length, and hang slightly tilted forward to ensure the correct perspective. For watches, jewelry, and cufflinks, open trays are more practical than drawers, as they allow easy access to items used daily. Boxes are suitable for items that should remain enclosed.
