Lisbon is a city of hills, tiles, and old houses. The Pombalino buildings of the Baixa district feature an internal wooden frame, and the apartments within have high ceilings and windows facing the street. Two things distinguish the city from Central Europe: the winter is humid rather than cold, and almost nothing is heated.
Humidity without heating
Between December and March, the relative humidity indoors often exceeds 70 percent, and many apartments lack continuous heating. This is the opposite of the Central European problem: wood swells, upholstery dries slowly, and leather thrives. Leather and coated surfaces cope better than open-pore textiles, and everything should allow for air circulation, meaning furniture on legs.
Narrow alleys, small elevators
In Baixa and Chiado, the streets are narrow and sometimes stepped, and the elevators in old buildings are tiny, often installed retrospectively into the stairwell. A one-piece sofa rarely fits. Disassemblable models, modular sofas, and furniture with removable legs solve this issue. If you live in a new building in Parque das Nações, you will not face this problem.
Light and Tiles
The Azulejo surfaces and light floors provide ample reflection. A wall mirror opposite the window further enhances this, while a rug absorbs echo in rooms with hard surfaces. For lighting, warm light is more effective than neutral light, otherwise the tiles can appear cold.
