In Bergen, over 2,000 millimetres of rain fall annually, spread over more than 200 days. The city is situated between seven mountains on the fjord, and the houses are traditionally made of wood. This results in a combination that is rarely found elsewhere: very humid outdoor air and very dry heating air in winter.
The change is the problem, not the humidity
Wood reacts not to a state, but to changes. Where humidity is 70 percent in autumn and 25 percent in January, solid wood works in opposite directions twice a year. Veneer on a stable base handles this much more calmly, and for solid wood, connections that allow movement are crucial >> Oak.
Wet wardrobe and upholstery
In Bergen, everyone comes in wet. Furniture near the entrance should be able to withstand this: Leather and coated surfaces instead of light, open-pored fabrics, and a bench for changing shoes that can be wiped clean.
Light as a constant theme
Overcast skies for months make rooms appear flat. Several warm light sources at eye level, such as floor lamps and table lamps, are significantly more effective than a bright ceiling light, which only intensifies the grey veil.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is humidity change worse than humidity itself?
Because wood reacts to change. Between 70 percent in autumn and 25 percent in winter, solid wood works in opposite directions twice a year.
Which furniture is suitable for the entrance area?
Wipeable furniture. Leather and coated surfaces instead of light, open-pored fabrics, plus a bench for changing shoes.
How do you light rooms under consistently grey skies?
With several warm light sources at eye level. A bright ceiling light tends to reinforce the flat impression rather than resolve it.
