Athens has two architectural eras that are relevant for interior design: the 19th-century neoclassical houses in Plaka and Kolonaki with high ceilings and stucco, and the post-war Polykatoikia with their deep, wrap-around balconies. Both are made of stone and both get very hot in summer.
Marble is not a luxury here, but a building material
Floors, windowsills, and stairs are often made of marble. If you place furniture with marble tops, you should aim for contrast rather than assimilation: dark stone on a light floor, or wood and brass as a counterweight. Otherwise, the room will appear too stony >> Marble.
The balcony is a room
In the Polykatoikia, the wrap-around balcony is the most important place to stay from May to October. It can accommodate full furnishing: chairs, a side table, and shade. When considering weight, the load-bearing capacity of the balcony must be observed, as large filled planters can quickly reach their limit.
Heat and textiles
Temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius in the shade are normal in the Athenian summer. Dense upholstery and heavy curtains store heat, while airy fabrics and leather are more comfortable. Air-conditioned rooms dry out the air significantly, which creates the same problem for solid wood as heating does in the north.
