Munich combines two architectural worlds: preserved old buildings in Schwabing, Lehel, and Maxvorstadt with high ceilings and stucco, alongside new constructions with very high standards of finish, floor-to-ceiling windows, and open floor plans. Both demand different decisions.
Old Buildings: Utilize Height Instead of Concealing It
In rooms with ceiling heights of three meters or more, everything can be larger than the catalog average. A mirror 140 centimeters high does not look large, but just right. A chandelier hangs lower than usual: above the dining table with about 75 to 85 centimeters distance to the tabletop. Where stucco is present, a calm furniture language is advisable, otherwise the ceiling and furnishings will compete. For more on this, please refer to our guide on Neoclassicism.
New Buildings: The Space is Open, Zones are Missing
In open floor plans, the choice of furniture is not the problem, but rather the structuring of the space. Kitchen, dining, and living areas are in one room, and without clear zones, everything appears haphazard. The rug defines the seating area, the dining table with its lighting defines the dining zone. As a rule of thumb for the table: approximately 60 centimeters width per person, at least 80 centimeters distance to the nearest wall. More information can be found under Furnishing a Luxury Dining Room.
High Standard of Finish, High Material Demands
Where oak, natural stone, and built-in elements are already of high quality, a piece of furniture with poor craftsmanship will immediately stand out. Pay attention to panel thickness, edge finishing, and whether the grain continues across joints. What constitutes quality and what is normal for natural materials is explained under Eichholtz Quality and Materials.
Delivery to Munich
From the Ruhr area to Munich, we deliver small items as parcels and large pieces by freight forwarder with telephone appointment scheduling. In-stock items within 7 to 10 days, back-ordered items within 4 to 6 weeks, please see Delivery Time. In old building districts, narrow staircases are the most common obstacle; please measure staircase width and door height before ordering a large sofa.
Frequently Asked Questions
How large should a dining table for six people be?
Approximately 180 by 90 centimeters, calculated at 60 centimeters per person. There should be at least 80 centimeters of free space all around so that chairs can be pushed back.
How do I structure an open living space?
With a rug and lighting instead of furniture blocks. The rug marks the seating area, the pendant light the dining table. Only then do other pieces of furniture follow.
How long does delivery to Munich take?
In-stock items 7 to 10 days, freight shipments an additional few days for appointment coordination.
