What High Ceilings Demand
In a Wilhelminian era room, a normally proportioned piece of furniture can appear lost. The wall above a sofa remains empty, the light fixture hangs too high, and the room, despite expensive furnishings, feels unfinished. Three measurements can help. A wall mirror can easily be 120 to 180 centimeters high. A chandelier, with a four-meter ceiling height, hangs significantly lower than usual; above a dining table, its bottom edge should be about 75 to 85 centimeters above the tabletop, and in open spaces, it should allow for a clearance of 220 centimeters underneath. Curtains should be mounted just below the ceiling, not on the window frame, otherwise they will visually compress the room.
Structuring Long Rooms
Berlin rooms are often narrow and deep. Instead of placing everything against the walls, divide the room into two zones: a seating area around a rug at the front, and a dining table or workspace at the back.
