Historic elevators in Milanese buildings are often less than 80 centimeters wide, meaning a three-seater sofa can only be moved via the stairs.
High Ceilings, Narrow Floor Plans
Apartments in the city center often have ceiling heights of around four meters with comparatively narrow floor plans. This shifts the proportions: low furniture appears lost, and light must come from above, otherwise the upper meter remains dark. A tall wall mirror embraces the height instead of ignoring it, while a console table structures the length.
Lighting in Milanese Period Buildings
Many apartments have a single ceiling outlet in the center of the room and nothing else. The result is a bright spot and dark corners. The solution is zoning: a light above the table, one next to the armchair, one on the wall.
