Rug Sizes: How Big Your Rug Should Be Under Your Dining Table, Sofa, and Bed

Teppichgrößen: wie groß der Teppich unter Esstisch, Sofa und Bett sein muss

Hardly any decision in furnishing goes wrong as often as the rug size. The reason is trivial: rugs are chosen in a store or on a screen, where every area looks large. In the room, the same area suddenly looks lost. A rug that is too small draws the eye together and makes even a carefully curated interior look cheap.

Under the dining table: 60 to 75 cm overhang, all around

The rule is purely a movement rule. When someone stands up, they push the chair back about 60 cm; for chairs with wide armrests, it's more like 75 cm. If the rug is smaller, the back legs roll over the edge, the chair wobbles, and you hear it at every meal.

Example calculation: A dining table of 200 x 100 cm needs at least 320 x 220 cm. A 240 cm table accordingly needs 360 x 220 cm. Round tables get round rugs, diameter plus at least 120 cm.

Under the seating group: three permissible variations

In the living room, there isn't one right size, but three arrangements that work. Anything in between looks accidental.

Everything on it. Sofa, armchairs, and side tables are completely on the rug. The most generous solution, it requires space and looks most serene in large rooms.

Front legs on it. The rug starts under the front edge of the sofa and encompasses the coffee table. The most common compromise, it visually unifies the seating group without occupying the entire room.

Only the table. All furniture stands next to it, the rug lies as an island under the coffee table. Only works if it's large enough not to look like a runner: at least as wide as the sofa.

What is never an option: a rug that is narrower than the sofa in front of it. It makes the piece of furniture look as if it were standing on a towel.

In the bedroom: the rug starts behind the nightstands

Here, the moment of getting up matters. The rug should extend at least 60 cm to the left and right of the bed so that you don't land on a cold floor in the morning. At the foot of the bed, 60 to 80 cm is sufficient. Two approaches are common: a large rug that runs under the bed and only starts behind the nightstands, or two narrow runners along the long sides.

Two things that go wrong more often than size

The orientation. The rug follows the longer room axis, not the shorter one. If it lies across, the room appears cramped.

The pile height. Under dining tables, pile heights over 12 mm are impractical; chairs are difficult to push, and crumbs disappear into the pile. In the living room, it's the opposite: the pile can be deeper there, which dampens echoes in the room.

Frequently Asked Questions

How large should the rug under a dining table be?

At least 60 to 75 cm larger than the tabletop all around. For a table of 200 x 100 cm, this means at least 320 x 220 cm.

Does the sofa have to be completely on the rug?

No. Three arrangements work: everything on it, only the front legs on it, or the rug as an island under the coffee table. However, it should never be narrower than the sofa.

What pile height is suitable under the dining table?

Up to about 12 mm. Higher piles make it difficult to push chairs and trap crumbs.
