Realistically estimate the weight of planters

The empty weight of an aluminum planter is 3 to 8 kilograms, ceramic weighs 8 to 15 kilograms, and stoneware or concrete 15 to 30 kilograms. In addition, there is the substrate: one liter of potting soil weighs about 0.5 kilograms dry and up to 0.8 kilograms wet. Transparent mats are barely noticeable under dark planters. With oiled parquet, standing water can seep into cracks, so the saucer should have a raised rim of at least 8 millimeters.

Tiles and natural stone can withstand heavy loads but are susceptible to scratches from metal edges or stone particles. Here, felt glides 5 millimeters thick directly under the saucer are often sufficient. Carpets can develop pressure marks under heavy pressure that do not recover. A rigid plate made of wood or plastic with an area of at least 40 by 40 centimeters distributes the load and can be hidden under the planter if necessary.

Planning mobility and relocation

Planters weighing over 50 kilograms are difficult to move without aids. Rolling saucers with lockable castors can support up to 150 kilograms and allow relocation without floor contact. The castors should have a diameter of at least 50 millimeters and be made of soft rubber to prevent scratches. For very heavy planters weighing 100 kilograms or more, Teflon furniture glides can be used, which are slid under the corners of a support plate.

If you regularly rearrange planters, you should mark the location beforehand with masking tape and clean the floor area. Grains of sand or dirt particles act like sandpaper when the planter is moved over them. After placement, it is advisable to check that the saucer lies flat and that no tilting is possible.
