The Importance of the Right Dining Table Size
Choosing the appropriate dining table is a central decision when furnishing your dining area. Besides aesthetic aspects and material selection, size plays a crucial role in comfort and functionality. A table that is too small can lead to cramped conditions and discomfort, while a table that is too large can disproportionately dominate the room and remain unused. The goal is to find a harmonious balance that meets both everyday needs and special occasions.
Fundamentals of Space Planning
To ensure a pleasant atmosphere at the dining table, you should plan a certain minimum area per person. These guidelines serve as an orientation to ensure neither you nor your guests feel cramped:
- Width per person: Plan for a width of at least 60 cm per seat. Ideally, 70 cm to 80 cm per person is more comfortable, especially when multiple courses are served or extensive tableware is used.
- Table depth: A table width of at least 90 cm is recommended to provide sufficient space for plates, glasses, and cutlery without items touching. With a table width of 100 cm to 110 cm, there is also enough room for serving platters, decorations, or candles in the center.
- Legroom: Ensure sufficient legroom under the table. The lower edge of the tabletop should ideally be at least 70 cm above the floor. The table legs or base should be positioned so that they do not restrict freedom of movement.
Calculating the Ideal Table Length for Rectangular Tables
For rectangular dining tables, the required length can be determined relatively easily. Multiply the number of desired seats along the long side by the recommended space per person. Also, consider the head ends if they are also to be occupied.
- For 4 people: A table of approx. 120 cm length and 90 cm width is sufficient.
- For 6 people: A length of approx. 180 cm with 90-100 cm width offers comfortable space.
- For 8 people: A table of approx. 220 cm to 240 cm length and 100 cm width is recommended.
- For 10 people: For this, you will need a length of at least 280 cm to 300 cm with 100 cm to 110 cm width.
Please note that when occupying the head ends, one seat is removed from the long side to ensure a pleasant arrangement.
Special Shapes: Round and Oval Dining Tables
Round and oval tables promote communication as everyone can see each other better. The calculation of space requirements differs slightly here:
-
Round tables: For a round table, you can estimate the diameter based on the number of people.
- For 4 people: A diameter of 100 cm to 120 cm is suitable.
- For 6 people: A diameter of 120 cm to 150 cm provides enough space.
- For 8 people: Calculate with a diameter of 150 cm to 180 cm.
- Oval tables: Oval tables offer the advantages of a round table in terms of communication but also allow for a higher number of people than a round table of the same diameter. The length recommendations are similar to those for rectangular tables, with the width of the table at its widest point also needing to be adequately dimensioned.
Room Planning and Freedom of Movement
In addition to the pure table size, it is crucial to consider the surrounding space. Plan enough space for chairs and the freedom of movement for people, even when they stand up or sit down. A minimum distance of 80 cm between the table edge and the wall or other furniture is ideal for this. This allows for comfortable pushing back of chairs and unobstructed passage.
When making your selection, also consider the possibility of extendable tables. These offer flexibility and can be enlarged when needed, without taking up unnecessary space in everyday life. Careful planning of the dining table size significantly contributes to the well-being and aesthetics of your dining area.
